Base Preparation For a Concrete Patio

Backyard Base Preparation

The key factor in building with concrete or pavers is the base. The main components of creating a solid base are compaction and base material. Below we discuss proper excavation depth, base material, and thicknesses.

Excavate

Excavation involves removing any native topsoil. Topsoil captures and holds moisture, which can cause concrete to heave when frozen. Repeated heaving during winter can result in cracks and shifts in your concrete patio, affecting its structural integrity. It is advised to dig 8-10 inches in depth before laying your base material.

Base Material

After excavation, prepare your base with 3/4-inch clear gravel stone. Avoid regular A-gravel as it retains moisture, which can freeze and damage your concrete patio. Clear stone does not retain moisture, preventing expansion issues. It also reaches near perfect compaction with little compacting.

It is also crucial to ensure that the concrete slopes in a manner that prevents water from getting underneath it. A properly constructed concrete patio can last for many decades. For foot traffic patios, use 4 inches of clear stone topped with 4 inches of concrete.
