Base Preparation For a Concrete Patio

Backyard Base Preperation

The most important thing when building with concrete, or pavers is the base. The primary elements of creating a good base are compaction and base material. Below we will talk about proper excavation depth, base material and thicknesses.

Excavate

Excavation should include the removal of any native top soil. This is because top soil captures and holds moisture which when frozen heaves concrete. Continual heaving winter after winter can cause cracks and shifting of your concrete patio. Therefore, hindering the structural integrity of your patio. It is recommended that you dig 10-12 inches in depth before laying your base material.

Base Material

Once your site has been excavated you are now ready for your base material. We have found that 3/4 inch clear gravel stone works best. For patios that only experience foot traffic we recommend 6 inches of clear stone topped off with 4 inches of concrete.

Base Material

Their are two main advantages of using 3/4 inch clear stone. Firstly, as soon as this stone is laid it is nearly at a 100% compaction rate. Secondly, it provides the best drainage. This is essential as water that gets under the concrete does not get absorbed and therefore can not heave your concrete patio.

It is equally important to have the concrete sloping in a manner that water does not get under the concrete. At Ace Concrete we take it a step further by laying filter fabric to separate the stone from the native soil to ensure they do not mix and hinder drainage in the future. A well built concrete patio should last you many decades to come!
